Prevent wasps and other pests.

1) Cover any unnecessary holes in your building.

  • The most dangerous and costly pest problems involve pests entering the walls, roofs, pipes and utility systems of buildings.

  • Seal cracks in roofs, bricks, wood, doors and windows.

  • Pay close attention to areas where two different materials meet.

  • Cover weep holes with steel wool or aluminum mesh. Do not use cement or caulking. Air must be able to get through.

2) Reduce access to food waste, especially sugar and protein.

  • Food attracts pests including wasps.

  • Ensure garbage cans, especially green bins, do not have holes or gaps.

  • Avoid dropping food when eating outside.

  • If you have fruit trees, dispose of fallen fruits.

3) Remove nests while they are small and exposed.

  • If the cells of a nest are exposed, wasp spray can eliminate it.

  • If the nest is bigger and is enclosed, wasp spray is unlikely to work and will cause surviving wasps to become aggressive.
